NASABA Urges Swift Confirmation of Sri Srinivasan to U.S. Court of Appeals

April 9, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 9, 2013

The North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA) enthusiastically supports the confirmation of Srikanth “Sri” Srinivasan to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and is actively engaged in garnering bipartisan support for his nomination. Mr. Srinivasan is the first South Asian American a president has nominated to a seat on a federal circuit court, and when confirmed, will be the first person of Asian descent on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. “Mr. Srinivasan’s experience and background make him the ideal candidate for this position and we commend the Obama administration’s ongoing efforts to increase judicial diversity. We urge the United States Senate to swiftly confirm Mr. Srinivasan to the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit,” said NASABA President Emilie Ninan.

Mr. Srinivasan currently serves as the Principal Deputy Solicitor General of the United States and is one of the most experienced appellate advocates in the nation. He is preparing to argue his 25th case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Srinivasan served in the Solicitor General’s office under both President Bush (2002-2007) and President Obama (2011-present). Mr. Srinivasan received his B.A., M.B.A. and J.D. from Stanford University and clerked for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled Mr. Srinivasan’s confirmation hearing for 2:30 pm on Wednesday April 10, 2013 in Washington D.C. at the Dirksen Senate Office Building Room 226.

NASABA has issued letters of support for Mr. Srinivasan’s confirmation to members of both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate India Caucus. In addition, NASABA has called upon its membership and affiliates to encourage community members and colleagues to attend the confirmation hearing. NASABA has further collaborated with its chapter in D.C. (SABA-DC) as well as the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and its chapter in D.C. (APABA-DC) to ensure that the strong community support Mr. Srinivasan enjoys is accurately reflected in advance of and at his April 10th confirmation hearing.

NASABA is a voluntary bar organization and serves an umbrella organization to 25 chapters in the United States and Canada. NASABA is a recognized forum for professional growth and advancement for South Asian attorneys in North America and seeks to protect the rights and liberties of the South Asian community at large across the continent.
