NASABA seeks Executive Director

The North American South Asian Bar Association (“NASABA”) seeks an experienced individual to serve as its part-time Executive Director, to assist in the coordination and direction of the operation of the organization.  The Executive Director will report directly to the NASABA President and its 9-member Executive Committee (the “EC”) and to supervise the  Executive Assistant and volunteers.  It is expected that the Executive Director will devote 15-20 hours per week on average to his/her job duties.  The Executive Director will have the following general responsibilities:

  • Fundraising: Develop, coordinate, and execute development efforts; maintain donor relationship and sponsorship records; assist the EC with Sponsor relations and work with the NASABA Foundation on behalf of the EC and the NASABA Board of Directors (the “Board”);
  • Programs, Public Relations and Policy: Assist the EC, the Board and Committee Chairs to execute, coordinate, and develop NASABA’s programs and policy; serve as NASABA’s liaison with other bar associations (e.g. other minority bar associations, the American Bar Association), other South Asian (“SA”) organizations, the community and the media; assist the NASABA Vice President of Public Relations with creation of press releases and a media outreach strategy; assist with legislative and other policy efforts;
  • Management and Administration: Assess key needs of the organization; Attend all meetings, on request; assist with the National Convention planning; Coordinate communication with  Chapters, Sponsors, the NAC and the NASABA Foundation (NASABA’s charitable affiliate); assist NASABA President and President-Elect with day-to-day matters; assist NASABA VP of Memberships with providing assistance to Chapters; assist NASABA VP-Affiliate Relations and VP-Community Outreach with outreach to other organizations; assist NASABA Treasurer with budget development and recordkeeping; assist NASABA VP of Public Relations with monitoring and maintaining the organization’s website.

Job Requirements:

  • Outstanding leadership, communication, management, and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with the EC, the Board, the NAC, committees, members, and the SA community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to legal issues affecting the SA community.
  • Experience in non-profit fundraising.
  • Experience in media/public relations and event planning.
  • Knowledge of legal issues for non-profit organizations.
  • Computer proficiency, including word processing, database usage and spreadsheets.
  • Some travel required (e.g., attendance at annual conventions and regional conferences).
  • J.D. degree strongly preferred, but not required.

NASABA is a rapidly growing non-profit, professional organization of South Asian bar associations in the United States and Canada. Since its inception in 2003, NASABA has been advocating on behalf of the South Asian legal community nationally and locally in the areas of domestic surveillance, immigration, hate crimes and racial profiling. NASABA provides networking opportunities for the South Asian bar, monitors legislative developments and judicial appointments, promotes South Asian judicial appointments and political leadership, and builds coalitions within the legal profession and the community at large.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
