More than 100 Honor California’s Latest South Asian Judge

The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California’s October 20, 2010 reception honoring Judge Upinder Singh Kalra’s appointment to the state court was a huge success, drawing over 100 attendees.

NASABA, SCCLA, JABA and NETIP LA-OC co-sponsored the historic event.  “NASABA is incredibly proud and honored by the appointment of Upinder Singh Kalra to the California state court,” said Jolsna John, President-Elect of NASABA.

Some notable guests who attended the reception that night at Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles included many members of the judiciary, sucfh as Hon. Lance Ito, Hon. Georgina Torres Rizk, Hon. Yvette Verastegui and Hon. Jay Gandhi.

Judge Kalra’s background includes working as an extern for U.S. District Court Judge Harry L. Hupp, Law Clerk  for California Attorney General’s Office – Criminal Division, five years at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s office and over 15 years as a trial attorney with the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender’s office.

Judge Kalra’s involvement in the community spans several organizations including LA county Bar’s Criminal Justice section, SABA – Criminal Chair, JABA and MABA. “The South Asian Bar Association is proud of Judge Kalra and thanks him for his support and dedication to the South Asian legal community,” said Ankita Patel, Co-President of SABA-So Cal, “He is an inspiration for all of us.”
